we drove down to see ali yestiddy. her family lives in a beach house, one of those thin beach houses you see when driving to the beach. they look tiny but this is deceptive - they're very deep and spacious inside. everyone walking out of those houses was barefoot and swimsuited. ali's mama made us a delicious lunch of hummus and things to dip in hummus and oven-crisped bread and chicken salad, which we ate in sunshine with mimosas. we went bicycling down the boardwalk in various wheeled contraptions and took the ferry to balboa island, admired the beautiful houses of people with money, wandered around different candy shops and lusted after the frozen bananas sold on the street.

the stompy stomp of little feet, the shrieky shriek of gaping maws
the bars outside my window have become a jungle gym for little children who have been running amok for the past hour outside of my bedroom. i'm glad the grate is doing its job and keeping the little thugs out.

alabama arkansas
there was a mariachi band in the gold room last night. it paused the jukebox and played screeching, deafening, trumpeting mariachi music for at least an hour. there was an extremely drunk boy with glasses who would explode through the door every time he re-entered the smoking section. one time he smacked me on the arm. another time he made a grand show of tucking his blue buttoned-down shirt into his skinny jeans. there was another boy with a front row of fake teeth, whose name rhymed with cannon and whose grandmother is named valerie. there was an australian recounting the celebrities he's seen in la. there was a bearded man who would catcall all the girls for the sheer joy of seeing their discomfort and at the end of the night he was doing push-ups on the bar floor. the bartender flitted around, dabbing glitter star gel on our faces with her fingers. there was free tequila; there was loud singing in the living room until four am.

blissed out
if the majority of my waking hours are to be spent at work, those last few hours of the day that are mine are only allowed to be pure bliss. i demand pure hedonism, all my favorite people, places, and activities and no headaches.

the annual grouch convention in syracuse, ny
Since his manners and tastes were different than the other characters, his creators hoped to address social issues by using his differences as a metaphor for racial and ethnic differences. Some viewers, however, saw Oscar as a "surrogate for poor, urban Americans" during the show's early seasons.
While appearing to be the size of a normal trash can, Oscar's residence is actually larger inside than the exterior would suggest. Oscar has noted through the years that it boasts such amenities as a farm, swimming pool, bowling alley, and a piano. Other items include Slimey, Oscar's pet worm; Fluffy, Oscar's pet elephant; Oscar's shoes; and a dimension gate to Grouchland, Oscar's homeworld.

eastern promises birthday year two
My aunt Kathy gave me a very generous gift certificate to the Russian Tea Room for my birthday, and she made sure it would cover all three of us for a meal. I've never been there! A Russian girl I spoke to on New Year's Eve said dinner was the best meal there (although they do brunch, lunch, and tea service as well). So I was thinking we could do it Thursday night for dinner, but I wanted to double check with you, Val, because that is your actual birthday day.

oysters, wine, oysters, wine
i'm currently reading a moveable feast (which was left behind by my subletter, embick) in order to learn how to properly be young. i think piggy is so obsessed with oysters because she has read too much hemingway.
if missy hadn't been so unfortunately dubbed as a puppy by myself at eight years old, i think she would have made a great georgina
